Remote Data Replication for Everyone

Author: Dana H

Remote data replication used to only be for the biggest and wealthiest companies. All companies rely on their computer networks to function but most small and midsize companies were operating with remote data replication and often without any data replication whatsoever.

Why is Remote Data Replication so Important?

When using computers as the main tool for your business operations, it is important to back up your data. A good metaphor for importance of remote data replication is having car insurance. 99% of the time you never really need your insurance, but it is that one time you have an accident, even a minor one that you are thankful that you have it. A minor car accident can still cost plenty and so can data loss from you computer network. Losing the data on just one machine can equate to months even years of hard being lost.

The Minimum Needed for Data Back Up.

The absolute minimum needed is a periodic back up of the company's emails. Email is an important form business communications, documents, spreadsheets and files are all moved via email. Backing up email files is important from a legal standpoint also. Emails can be subpoenaed in court and can be a good defense against disgruntled former employees. Unfortunately technology has advanced beyond, most offices now use instant messaging to move files and communicate with little back up.

Remote Data Replication

Remote data replication will replicate all of the data on your network and place it in a remote location. By utilizing remote data replication, companies can be assured that a catastrophe like a natural disaster or a terror attack will not be able to cause a loss of data. Remote data replication is already in place for institutions that need the security of a remote backup, such as banks and financial markets. Before those were the only companies which both could afford to and needed to use remote data replication.

Remote Data Replication Costs

Remote data replication costs have been reduced because of new technologies that use asynchronous replication. The old form of remote data replication was synchronous replication where data would be replicated twice, once to the intended server and the second to the backup location. This was both a time and resource consuming procedure. Now remote data replication is done by application hardware which will back up the data to available storage whenever it is available on the network, it can also send back data at time when the network is not busy making sure that network performance is not affected.

The current leader in remote data replication is Sanrad. Sanrad has an extensive library on remote data replication. To see more information check out http://www.sanrad.com/iscsi.asp?IP-SAN=535
